Background
Dr Barucija graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Biomedicine, followed by a Doctor of Dental Surgery.
She has trained across both public and private sectors, in metropolitan and rural clinics throughout Victoria, managing a diverse range of clinical cases.
That combination matters more than it might appear. Public-sector and rural practice tends to present a wider spread of presentations, and often more advanced disease, than a metropolitan private list — which is useful grounding for recognising what is in front of you.
It also means exposure to a different set of constraints. Public and rural clinics work with longer waiting lists, tighter budgets and patients who may not return for eighteen months, which trains a clinician to prioritise ruthlessly: what must be done today, what can wait, and what will still be manageable at the next visit. That habit of thinking transfers well to private practice, where the temptation runs the other way.
Clinical interests
Dr Barucija enjoys all aspects of general dentistry, with particular interest in:
- Cosmetic dentistry
- Implant restorations
- Ceramic and crown work
- Digital CAD-CAM dentistry
Cosmetic dentistry is her stated passion. With an eye for detail and an appreciation of the artistic side of smile design, she works collaboratively with patients — designing smiles that are natural, individualised, and in harmony with each patient's own features rather than imposed on them.
That emphasis on harmony with existing features is the substantive point. The most common regret in cosmetic dentistry is a result that looks like dentistry rather than like teeth — too white, too uniform, too square for the face it sits in. Cosmetic dentistry options and I want a smile makeover. Where should I start? are the sensible places to begin.
What those interests mean in practice
Implant restorations. Worth understanding, because the term is often confused with implant surgery. An implant is placed in two distinct stages, frequently by two different clinicians:
- Surgical placement of the titanium post into the bone — carried out by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, a periodontist, or a suitably trained general dentist. Healing then takes months while the bone integrates with the implant.
- The restoration — designing and fitting the crown that sits on top, matching its shape, colour and bite to the rest of the mouth.
“Implant restoration” is the second stage. It is the part the patient sees and lives with, and it determines whether the result looks like a tooth and functions like one. Digital CAD-CAM dentistry. Computer-assisted design and manufacture replaces conventional impression material with a digital scan, and produces the restoration from a milled ceramic block. What it changes for a patient:
- No impression putty, which matters a great deal to anyone who gags
- The scan can be checked and retaken in seconds if it is not clean
- Some restorations can be made and fitted the same day, removing the two-week wait and the temporary crown CEREC Restorations · Everything you need to know about CEREC technology
The honest qualification: digital is not automatically better. For front teeth where appearance is critical, a ceramist working by hand can build in colour gradation and translucency that a milled monolithic block does not match — and a good clinician will send those cases to the laboratory rather than mill them. In-House Laboratory · Our Technology
Ceramic and crown work. The thing worth knowing before agreeing to any of it: preparing a tooth for a crown or veneer is irreversible, and once prepared the tooth will need a restoration for the rest of its life. An onlay is the more conservative option where enough sound tooth remains, and it is a fair question to ask. Approach
Dr Barucija is known for a gentle and caring approach, with a strong focus on listening to patients and tailoring each treatment plan to individual needs.
She is fluent in Bosnian and Croatian. In her spare time she enjoys travelling and exploring new places.
Why the languages are more than a courtesy
Consent in Australian healthcare has to be informed to be valid. That means the material risks, the alternatives and the consequences of doing nothing have all been explained and understood — not merely that a form was signed. See Understanding Your Treatment.
For a patient whose first language is not English, that understanding is exactly what is most at risk. Dental vocabulary is technical even for native speakers: pulp, margin, periodontal, irreversible, prognosis. A patient nodding through an explanation they have only half followed has not consented in any meaningful sense.
Being able to have that conversation in a patient's own language is a clinical matter, not a hospitality one. Where a practitioner does not share the language, an interpreter should be used rather than a family member — particularly a child — because family members edit, summarise and soften, and the whole point is that nothing is edited out.
Case gallery
Dr Barucija publishes a gallery of her own cases — porcelain veneers, crowns, bridges and composite bonding, with after-images typically taken around two weeks after the procedure.
The practice states that all photos and videos are shared with full patient consent, and that no filters, AI alterations or unrealistic lighting have been applied.
Those conditions matter. Under the National Law, before-and-after images used in advertising a regulated health service must be realistic and must not create an unreasonable expectation of benefit — which means consistent lighting and angles, no retouching, and a clear statement that results vary. Results, recovery times and potential risks vary for each individual and each procedure, and a gallery shows what was achieved for those patients, not what will be achieved for you.
Two further things to keep in mind when looking at any gallery anywhere:
- It is a selected set. Every gallery shows cases that went well. That is not dishonest, but it is not a representative sample of outcomes.
- Two weeks is an early photograph — before the gum has fully settled, before any staining or chipping, and before the long-term maintenance is apparent. The meaningful question about a restoration is what it looks like at ten years. See How long do porcelain veneers last?

What a general dentist does
A general dentist holds general registration with the Dental Board of Australia and is the practitioner most people see for routine and restorative care:
- Examination, diagnosis and treatment planning
- Radiographs and their interpretation
- Fillings, crowns, bridges and veneers
- Root canal treatment
- Extractions, including wisdom teeth
- Dentures
- Prescribing medication
- Referral to specialists where a case calls for it
General registration is not a lesser qualification than specialist registration — it is a different scope. Specialists have completed additional postgraduate training restricted to one field; general dentists treat across all of them, and refer when the case warrants it. Dentists & Registered Specialists
“Cosmetic dentistry” is not one of the thirteen registered dental specialties in Australia, and “cosmetic dentist” is not a protected title — any registered dentist may use it. The words carry no regulatory meaning, which is why the question to ask is about training and experience in the specific procedure, not about the label. What's new in cosmetic dentistry? and What does restorative dentistry involve? set out the ground the terms are meant to cover.
And on buying cosmetic work on price overseas, the practice has written the uncomfortable version: Turkey Teeth: The Real Risks of Getting Veneers Overseas (And What We See When Patients Come Back).
How to verify any practitioner yourself
- Go to the AHPRA public register at ahpra.gov.au and choose “Register of practitioners”.
- Search by name, or by registration number — for this practitioner, DEN0002314036.
- The entry shows the profession, registration type, whether registration is current, the date of first registration, any specialty held, and any conditions, undertakings or reprimands.
It is free, public and authoritative. This page records what the practice publishes; the register records what the regulator holds. If the two disagree, the register is correct.
Common questions
What type of dentist is Dr Amina Barucija?
This profile identifies Dr Barucija as a general dentist. General dentists diagnose and treat across a broad scope and refer when a case would benefit from specialist assessment.
Is cosmetic dentistry a registered specialty?
No. Cosmetic dentist is not a protected specialist title in Australia. Ask about training and experience in the specific procedure and verify any claimed specialist registration through AHPRA.
Who performs the surgical and restorative parts of an implant?
Roles vary by case. The practitioner placing the implant and the practitioner designing and fitting the final tooth may be different. Ask who is responsible for each stage and whether specialist input is recommended.
How should treatment options be compared?
Ask for the diagnosis, doing nothing, the least invasive option and materially different alternatives. Compare irreversible tooth removal, risks, longevity, maintenance, likely replacement and complete cost.
When might a specialist opinion be useful?
A specialist opinion may be appropriate for complex diagnosis, high-risk or extensive treatment, uncertain prognosis, previous failure or care outside the treating dentist's competence. A referral is a normal part of safe practice.
Can I obtain a written estimate before treatment?
Yes. Request procedures and item numbers, who will provide them, inclusions, exclusions and likely additional stages so you can check benefits directly with your health fund.
How can I verify Dr Barucija's registration?
Search the AHPRA public register by name or the registration number published on this profile, DEN0002314036. The register is the authoritative source for current status and any specialist entry or conditions.
